Florida isn't really into cumbia, and this was the only place I could find that emphasized cumbia colombiana. They played good cumbia music, but the crowd there wasn't dancing, and I spent most the night dancing by myself. I did visit a club called Las Tabernas de Wancho in Hialeah, top floor of the Ramada. It's also more of a lounge, rather than a dance club. I would not recommend Hoy Como Ayer at night due to its location in Little Havanna. Downtown Miami is fairly dead at night and the clubs draw small crowds of regulars.

We spent more on tips that on food and drink but that was our pleasure too. We definitely would come back here, even on a crowded night. That may not be for everyone (at all times) but this time around it was just perfect for us and the staff's attitude was excellent. Once in a while, it's nice to have a fun romantic evening without a zillion other people around. The A/C and air ventilation system is very good - only after a few other patrons started to smoke did we even notice the smell (we were visiting from California where smoking is prohibited in bars, restaurants, and lounges). Apparently, there is also a very large back section that opens up for the weekend crowds. They have an excellent light system and a dance floor that makes good use of the space. They also passed along our dance song requests and the sound system was not too loud (again, much appreciated). Our waitress was always checking in with us, which was very much appreciated. We don't drink so they set us up with a large carafe of pineapple juice and a very good-sized 10-wing appetizer platter (only $8). They have a few pool tables near the dance floor which only cost $1 per game (thank you!). We wanted to just do some dancing (all by ourselves it tuirned out) but the staff was very cheerful (not bored) and very accommodating. My wife and I came there on a totally dead Thursday night.
